About

Hi, my name is María Vélez-Serna and I am a researcher and teacher in film and media studies. I worked at the University of Stirling between 2015 and 2025, and at Glasgow before that. Here is my ORCID record (list of publications). For my sins, I also have a LinkedIn profile.

I set up this blog in 2015, when I was working on a research project titled Ephemeral cinemas in historical perspective (now a book published by Amsterdam University Press). After that, I have worked on other topics, such as coal mining and useful cinema, archive film and extractivism. Before doing this I worked on Early Cinema in Scotland.

I don’t update this blog very often but sometimes reflect on events I have attended or things I have read, with a focus on non-theatrical film exhibition.

Please feel free to use the comments box or LinkedIn to get in touch, tell me about films I should watch, ask questions or make corrections.
